WiMAX? A disaster

Classified in: WiMAXpaomic at 4:56 pm

Buzz Broadband CEO closed down its WiMAX network, labeling it as a miserable failure. Garth Freeman spoke to an astonished audience at the International WiMax Conference in Bangkok: his main concerns are that non-LOS (line of sight) connection vanishes after 2 kilometers only, indoor coverage falls after 400 m and jitter can be as high as 1 second, which would make this technology difficult for services that need a lower latency, such as VOIP.

One year ago, at the same conference, Buzz CEO was enthusiastic about WiMAX, which increased company shares value of about 25%. He had reported a few indoor problems, as other operators from India, but none could imagine this. The company abandoned WiMAX in favor of more consolidated technologies, such as TD-CDMA standard at 1.9GHz—used by operators such as wireless DOCSIS, which operates at up to 38Mbps in the 3.5GHz spectrum, and also more conventional wireless mesh platforms at 2.4GHz.

Not all WiMAX operators are unhappy, maybe for concerns about companies shares, but maybe Freeman’s words were too hasty.

Apple tries to push Safari into Windows

Classified in: Apple,iTunes,Technology newspaomic at 2:50 pm

With the latest update of the iTunes software for Windows, Apple suggests users to update Safari (even if they didn’t previously installed it!). This move has been criticized by many, as Mozilla CEO, since they compare Apple to Microsoft, when it added Internet Explorer pre-installed to Windows systems. Updated statistics say that Safari has a share of 5.7 % in the Internet, just after IE and Firefox. With this move maybe Apple wants to gain a bigger share in the browser war, and it does this claiming that Safari is

“fastest and easiest-to-use browser for the PC. It displays web pages faster than any other browser and is filled with innovative features — all delivered in an efficient and elegant user interface”

as states by the updater program in a pop-up screen. Some report that Safari is really a more standard compliant and faster browser, maybe with this move Apple will significantly increase the Safari market share over the main two competitors.

AC_FL_runcontent alternatives

Classified in: Flash,HTMLpaomic at 6:06 pm

AC_FL_runcontent is a JS script used to embed flash movie into HTML pages. There are a number of alternatives to it, the main one being SWF_Object, available at Google code repository. It adds features as flash player version detection and alternative code display, both web standard compliant. Other useful scripts can be UFO or SWFFix, but both of them are deprecated, and the respective developers joined SWF_Object 2.0 team (or suggest ot use this tool). To learn more about Flash embedding and object/embed quarrel read here.
